Nicasio Fernandez American, b. 1993

Nicasio Fernandez’s surrealist canvases are populated with exaggerated humanoid forms who occupy a world remarkably close to our own, but with a heightened sense of both humor and unease. His figures are in some respects fantastical, marked by elongated snouts, expressive features, and distorted proportions, but are often engaged in methodical, grounded pursuits like bricklaying or climbing ladders, imbuing the absurd with a sense of routine. 

Fernandez was born in 1993 in Yonkers, New York, and studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, receiving his BFA in 2015. He lives and works in Mahopac, New York. He has exhibited widely, with solo and group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Seoul, Philadelphia, Austin, and Seattle, at galleries including Harper’s, Ross+Kramer, Over the Influence, and Half Gallery. His works are held in prominent private collections such as the Hall Art Foundation and the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, and have been featured in auctions at Phillips and other contemporary platforms.
