Biography
Matt Kleberg (b. 1985, Kingsville, TX) received his BA from the University of Virginia in 2008 and his MFA from the Pratt Institute in 2015. His paintings, inspired by myriad influences, operate like invitations into illusory spaces while remaining firmly grounded in the built world. Kleberg’s artistic vocabulary is defined by his distinctive use of architecturally inspired elements: niches, beams, fans, arches, stripes, and sunbursts. These motifs, drawn from structures associated with performance and ceremony, underscore his ongoing engagement with ideas of framing, ornamentation, ritual, and theatricality.
Coverage of his work can be found in various publications, including The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, Artsy, Vice, Maake Magazine, ArtDaily, Juxtapoz Magazine, and Hyperallergic. His work is featured in multiple private and public collections, including the Williams College Museum of Art, the AD&A Museum of the University of California Santa Barbara, the Old Jail Art Center, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the National Gallery of Art. Kleberg currently lives and works in San Antonio, TX.

"One of the most talented painters working abstractly today, Matt Kleberg started taking painting lessons at age 13 and eventually turned that training into an apprenticeship, which he continued until heading off to college. Inspired by architectural moments encountered on his neighborhood walks and more adventurous travels, he makes sketches to spark ideas for small-scale studies and larger paintings of architectural elements reduced to colorful, geometric forms. Mostly mesmerized by entryways and windows, he isolates their arched and rectangular structures and paints them in contrasting colors-often creating textured surfaces through the use of oil stick on canvas." - Paul Laster, Galerie Magazine, 8 Solo Must-See Gallery Shows in September
