Elegant meets approachable

There’s no slowing down Suzanne Tucker. The interior designer published her first book in September, recently launched a textile line, and is now working on a tabletop collection with Royal Limoges. She just finished two mountain houses — one in Lake Tahoe, the other in Sun Valley, Idaho. And this month, she designed the dining room in the 2010 San Francisco Decorator Showcase, which is open through the end of May.

Of the showcase experience, which marked her seventh time participating, she said: “I really enjoy the opportunity to create an imaginary client — dreaming up the story of who might live here, then pulling my design staff together to work as a team. We brainstorm together, collaborate, edit, inject, reject, and push back and forth. In the end, everyone’s talents and dedication really shine forth in a beautifully cohesive space.”

Tucker started out in the industry as a secretary for designer Michael Taylor. After his death in 1986, she and partner Timothy Marks purchased Taylor’s firm and launched Tucker & Marks. Since then, Tucker has become an icon herself. This year, she was once again named to Architectural Digest’s list of Top 100 designers. While her rooms exude style and sophistication, they also incorporate the client’s personality — making the spaces comfortable and very livable. Whether she’s working on a family ranch, a modern condominium or a historic Julia Morgan residence, her passion for antiques and talent for weaving them into an interior are evident.
