Jazz asserts Matisse’s formal resourcefulness as well as his enduring skill as a colorist. It is a prime example of the innovative work the artist produced in his final decades, in what has been described by long-time Tate Modern director Nicholas Serota as the “late, great flowering” of Matisse’s career.⁠
