ADAA The Art Show: New York City, New York
Berggruen Gallery is pleased to announce our 35th consecutive year of participation in The Art Show, organized by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA). Please visit us at Booth A15 at the Park Avenue Armory, New York. A preview gala benefiting the Henry Street Settlement will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
The gallery is delighted to exhibit a solo presentation of work by American artist John Alexander. His lush paintings, populated with diverse flora and fauna, signal a reverence for the tradition of landscape painting as practiced by such art historical masters as Claude Monet or the more recent Hudson River School painters of the American northeast. The gallery will showcase a selection of Alexander’s most recent work.

2023 will mark Berggruen Gallery’s thirty-fifth consecutive year as participants of the Art Show since the fair’s inception, and our second-ever solo artist presentation. The gallery is delighted to propose a solo presentation of work by American painter, John Alexander, whom we have had the pleasure of representing for the last eight years.
Berggruen Gallery will showcase Alexander’s lush paintings and intricate works on paper, including recent landscapes, botanicals, and animals. Born in Beaumont, Texas in 1945, Alexander grew up between the bayous and the wooded wilderness of East Texas, enjoying camping and fishing trips within the diverse landscape that would ultimately become so influential to him. Alexander’s understanding and appreciation for the natural world was also fortified by his father’s environmentalism. For Alexander, developing an environmental acuity, especially for his native Texas, was essential. Employing bold, painterly strokes, Alexander maintains an acute sensibility of his subject matter. The gallery’s presentation at the Park Avenue Armory will highlight his dedicated attention to the natural world.
In the late 1970’s, Alexander moved to Manhattan. Today, the artist divides his time between his SoHo studio loft and home in Amagansett. The works in this presentation will include paintings and drawings inspired by the artist’s lush Amagansett gardens. Abundant ponds brimming with life fill his canvases, with blooming water lilies scattered across the surface. These works, populated with diverse flora and fauna, signal a reverence for the tradition of landscape painting as practiced by art historical masters such as Claude Monet or the more recent Hudson River School painters of the American Northeast.
This presentation at the Park Avenue Armory will showcase Alexander’s most recent body of work. He continues to imbue his keen observations of the natural world and vivid imagery with symbolic meaning. The exoticism and beauty of his creations, as romantic as they seem, also possess an introspective quality, and speak to the psychology and experiences of the artist. Alexander has described his manner of painting as being akin to the same quality of emotional expressiveness that characterizes the work of the Abstract Expressionists.
