  • Berggruen Gallery is pleased to announce a solo presentation of eight new works by California-based artist Heather Day for the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) Art Show in New York. This presentation marks Day’s third solo presentation with the gallery. Rooted in the traditions of abstract expressionism, Day’s biomorphic paintings intuitively reference her immediate and remembered environments. Gathering the sensory experience of these moments, Day explores the relationship between light, color, memory and time and the ways in which they can be captured.

  • In Day’s practice, the physical act of deconstruction and re-building is critical. Exercising a limited amount of control, Day allows for serendipitous moments to occur in her process. Cutting, pouring, and sewing, Day fragments the canvas to construct harmonious fields of color, unexpected compositions, and tactile surfaces.

Based in the Mojave Desert, Heather Day translates her environment into fluid, pigmented washes that are cut and sewn into structural colorfields. In the new work heading to New York, biomorphic forms anchor against a grounding horizon line to explore how space, light, and scale are experienced. Showing the work in New York City creates a dialogue between two landscapes: one shaped by deep time and erosion, the other by human history and design. The resulting compositions question how deeply place dictates perception, and whether the geographic site of a painting's origin continues to resonate within it.
