Caio Fonseca: Paintings

Description

In his second solo exhibition with John Berggruen Gallery, Caio Fonseca continued his exploration of the play between proportion, scale, rhythm and tone in his luminous and lyrical abstract paintings. This exhibition included works that are acrylic on canvas and gouache on paper and all of which are titled and numbered by their place of origin - Pietrasanta. Fonseca chooses the palette of the work first and then begins painting from left to right, laying out the proportions of the work along linear grids reminiscent of musical staffs. Although Fonseca's paintings are purely abstract and he is sure to state that his images are not symbols and are not representational, his works do reflect his great love of Baroque music with whimsical glyphs that dance across his densely textured and translucent surfaces with an intriguing sense of balance, harmony and composition. "Music can explain and reveal itself through its own methods, without language and that's what I try to do with painting."
