John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Caio Fonseca. This exhibition opens Wednesday, November 20th, and will run through Saturday, December 28th, 2002.
This will be Caio Fonseca's fourth solo exhibition at John Berggruen Gallery. Fonseca continues his exploration of the play between proportion, scale, rhythm and tone in these luminous and lyrical abstract works. Although Fonseca's works are purely abstract and he is sure to state that his images are not symbols and are not representational, his works do reflect his great love of Baroque music with whimsical glyphs that dance across his densely textured and translucent surfaces with an intriguing sense of balance, harmony and composition.
Mr. Fonseca currently splits his time between his two studios; one in New York City and the other in the Tuscan village of Pietrasanta, Italy, the town from which he draws his inspiration for this show. A native of New York City, Caio Fonseca grew up in a house full of art and of artists. In the late 1970s he moved to Europe where he spent time studying and painting and in 1992 finally returned to New York City. Fonseca's works are held in numerous public and private collections in Europe and the United States including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C. and The Brooklyn Museum.
An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, November 20th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
